When a sync payment happens, how is the money distributed?

agreements & contracts commission custom music distributors licensing agents music libraries music supervisors payment payouts royalties & money sync fees

Payments are made via ACH direct deposit or check (usually). Cash app/paypal etc. are not commonly used but occasionally you may see some agencies can use those vendors.

As far as payment distribution amongst collaborators on a song:

  • For agencies: They will pay the sync fee, less their commission, to all collaborators separately based on splits (master/pub). However, there are also arrangements where 1 person can be the designated payout person who will pay each collaborator their share. You can request this when discussing payment expectations.
    • Example: You have a 50/50 deal with an agency or library and they land you a 10k placement. They will collect that fee, and payout $5K to all collaborator and keep $5K as their commission.
  • For Direct Placements: If you land a placement without the help of an agency, the studio or network will pay the entirety of the sync fee to all collaborators separately based on splits (master/pub). There are also arrangements where 1 person can be the designated payout person who will then pay each collaborator their share. You can request this when discussing payment expectations.
    • Example: You pitch a song directly to a music supervisor and land a 10k placement. They will payout $10K to all collaborators or designated payout person.

Note: This for the "All In" sync fee (master + publishing). "
